      SCRANTON - Napoleon Forest SEARS, JR., 72, of the Sladesville community, died unexpectedly Thursday, June 9, at his home. Born in Hyde County on July 1, 1932, he was the son of the late Napoleon Forest and Lucille Lupton Sears. He attended school, graduated from Henderson High School, attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with the class of 1954. He was the proprietor of N.F. Sears store in Sladesville which his father founded. He was a member and lay reader in St. John's Episcopal Church, served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a member of Belhaven Lodge #509 AF&AM. He was first married to the former Helen Newton who preceded him in death and later married Nell Newman Sawyer who also preceded him in death. Surviving are five daughters: Helen S. Cahoon and Gwen S. Cahoon, both of Swan Quarter, Jill S. Tunnell of Washington, Paulette Faith Sears of Zebulon, and Charlotte E. Sears of Raleigh; two step-sons: Ronald and Randy Sawyer, both of Brunswick, Ga.; a step-daughter, Debbie Hinson of Kinston; a brother, Dr. Albin Bradford Sears of New Bern; four sisters: Glade S. Harris of Greensboro, Elizabeth "Betty" S. Carter of Newport News, Va., Rebecca S. Thompson of Simpson, and Judith S. Collins of Jacksonville; 10 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren and 6 step-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Myra S. Mutschler; a brother James Dalton Sears and a step-grandchild, Richard Sawyer. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at St. John's Episcopal Church in Sladesville with Rev. James Lupton officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Bryan Funeral Service in Swan Quarter is in charge. (The Coastland Times - Sunday, June 12, 2005; pg. 14A)
